Kindle cover

I don’t think I posted about this, but I got a 2nd generation Kindle for my birthday, slightly used, but in great condition (and very inexpensive, as well).  I’m so excited about it!  I had books downloaded and was reading (and fending off children who wanted to borrow it) within an hour of getting it.

The only problem with it?  No cover.  Just the Kindle and the cord came in the mail.  With three kids and my propensity to just shove things in my bag and move on, the poor Kindle doesn’t stand much of a chance in it’s nakedness.

The answer?  Well, I made a cover.  I started with a little bag a friend had made me years ago that just happened to be nearly the right size for the Kindle.  I also had a couple flat pieces of styrofoam from one of David’s gifts, a piece of super-soft cashmere fleece leftover from baby blanket making(it was $20/yard, long story there), a bit of velcro leftover from another project, a lost button, and some ribbon off a gift.  Total cost: $0  My favorite kind of project. Smile

So after a bit of time with my handy-dandy scissors and some liquid stitch, here it is:

The outside:

All laced up and ready to go:

I do have a “real” case on order from ebay…the kind that makes the Kindle feel like a book with a booklight attached.  I’m sure it’ll be nice, but it won’t arrive for a week or more and this case is just sooo soft.  Smile

Jewelry

While the kids were at home having playdates, I tried to find something to do so that I wasn’t hovering, wasn’t in the kids way, but was somewhere close by and busy looking so they wouldn’t think that I was pouring over their every word to each other. So this week I did a lot of jewelry making.

The first thing I made was very basic, just a few bits added to a big key on a chain to match some earrings I already had. The clear looking bead is actually purple.

The next one was in a similar vein: I have tons of pendants, but rarely wear them. So I made a Lisa Necklace (like a charm bracelet) with all little things that I like and have pendants for.

The next one is a necklace that I’ve had in my mind for quite a long time. I got the bigger beads at a bead shop in Kerrville in 2005. It’s a little raw around the top edges, but the way I wear it my hair always hides those parts, so I’m not concerned about fixing that right now.

The next necklace I’ve also been meaning to make for quite a while. I bought the beads in a bead boutique in Branson, Missouri a couple years ago, then never got around to making it. The flowers are glass, but the little dark beads are garnet. The other beads are sterling silver. The big one at the bottom is a slice of paisley granite. I love it! :)

The last necklace I finished today, finally, after having to take it all apart again today because I forgot one of the shells at the bottom. I got some of these beads at Hobby Lobby in town after last summers stuff went on sale. The golden pearls came from a bead shop in town. The small shells came from an old, old necklace David brought home from camp years ago. (Amusingly enough, we’ve inadvertently had a fish theme today: we ate goldfish crackers while watching the Incredible Mr. Limpet and fixing this necklace. None of that was planned.)

I have one last necklace planned for this week before moving on to some cross-stitching. :) I’ll try to remember to post a photo of it when I’m done.

Recipe Binder

The Weekly Challenge from ABFOL this week is about making a recipe binder.  As I’ve been saying a lot lately, I already made one.  Here’s mine:

My Recipe Binder: the cover I made in MS Word with their clipart.

The binder edge was also made in MS Word, using their template.

Front inside: space on the left for most frequently used recipes, index on the right (again with MSWord template & clipart)

Tab page: titled in MS Word, tab made with Stampin' Up cutter, cardstock.

It does need a few more tabs added for new categories we’ve come up with in the last couple years, but mostly it’s good to go. :)
